One of the most common questions we get here at Bluebird Orthodontics is “how much will braces cost?” With multiple treatment options to choose from and individualized plans for each patient, the answer to that may vary! Some of the contributing factors include, but are not limited to:
- Types of braces chosen
- If the braces are for a child or an adult
- Orthodontic issues being corrected
- Treatment length
- If the patient’s insurance covers orthodontics
- The orthodontist providing treatment
- The area in which the patient resides and receives treatment
These factors and more play a part in the total cost of treatment. Traditional metal braces tend to be the least expensive option, while clear braces or Invisalign clear aligner therapy may cost slightly more. Additionally, orthodontic treatment for children and teens will usually be slightly less expensive than treatment for adults. Patients with more severe or complex problems may require longer treatment times, which requires more work from the orthodontist as well as more follow-up appointments.
Lastly, each orthodontist will have their own pricing structure which is based in part on the region in which they practice. Some insurance policies provide coverage for orthodontic treatment, but how much will depend on the individual patient and the treatment needed. What is the average cost for braces?
Although there is no “one size fits all” answer for how much orthodontic treatment will cost, the average cost for a child can be anywhere from $3-7K, while adult braces or aligners can run from around $5-8K. As we mentioned, there are a number of factors that go into determining the exact cost of treatment for each individual.
Using dental insurance to cover orthodontic treatment
Some dental insurance plans will cover orthodontic treatment, but the coverage rules and policies can be confusing. Our team has many years of experience working with insurance companies, and we’re committed to helping our patients receive the maximum coverage!
Each individualized treatment plan is created based upon the patient’s unique health needs and the professional judgment of Dr. Frank. We won’t recommend treatment based solely on whether or not that treatment is covered by insurance. Instead, our patients are presented with a plan that will best address their needs and goals.
Once a patient has had a consultation and received a treatment plan from Dr. Frank, those who have dental insurance should check with their provider to see what they will and will not cover in the way of orthodontic treatment.
As a courtesy to our patients, we’re always happy to help with insurance claims and paperwork. Co-payments or out of pocket expenses will be estimated before you begin your treatment process. Once treatment is complete and all insurance payments are received, we will reconcile the account. At that point, patients will be responsible for any underpayment.
If insurance will not cover treatment, can the cost be deducted?
If braces are deemed to be medically necessary, the dental health care costs associated with them can sometimes be tax deductible. However, the cost has to exceed a certain amount before any deductions would kick in. Patients should keep track of all expenses associated with braces treatment if they wish to deduct the costs, including co-pays and check-up visits.
Will Medicaid cover the cost of braces?
Treatment costs may be covered by the Medicaid if the patient’s braces are considered to be medically necessary. For those who want to learn more about this possibility, visit http://www.medicaid.gov/. It is important to ask about the percentage of coverage and the lifetime maximum before proceeding with treatment.
Beautiful smiles are worth the investment at Bluebird Orthodontics
Braces are about more than improving a patient’s cosmetic appearance. Oral health is an important factor in the overall health of your body. Misaligned teeth can increase the risk for cavities, tooth decay, pain and soreness in the head and neck, and gum disease, among other things. While orthodontic treatment can be a significant investment, it’s one that will last a lifetime!
Your smile is too important to shop around based only on price. While it’s natural to want the best deal, it’s crucial to choose an orthodontist based on their skill and experience. Patients will spend a good deal of time in their orthodontist’s office over the course of their treatment, so be sure to choose a practice that makes you feel at home!
At Bluebird Orthodontics, our goal is to provide patients with a positive and stress-free orthodontic experience, from start to finish. It’s our belief that every person should have access to high-quality, affordable orthodontic care, and we do our best to ensure that every patient receives exactly that.
